vivica genaux & bach consort wien

17th century heroines were not always loving and virtuous, but sometimes brutal, desperate and malevolent. Some of Baroque opera’s most exciting and virtuosic music was composed to portray these dark and sinister moments of the soul. Vivica Genaux releases the devil within in some of her most ravaging vocal performances and powerful female character portrayals to date. Rubén Dubrovsky leads the Bach Consort Wien in a thrilling programme of Johann Adolf Hasse, Antonio Bononcini, Carlo Pollarolo and Pietro Torri, including several modern-day premieres.

la lotta d’ercole con acheloo

La Lotta d’Ercole con Acheloo by Agostino Steffani describes the battle between the demigod Herakles and the river god Acheloos for the love of the beautiful Deïaneira, daughter of King Oineus. The masterpiece was composed in 1689, in the year of the opening of the Hanover Palace Opera House.

Just 60 years after its creation, Georg Friedrich Händel was still so enthusiastic about La Lotta that he used no fewer than ten numbers of it for his own works in the 1749/50 season.

We present La Lotta in a star cast with the soprano Anna Prohaska and three of the most important countertenors of our time, whose voices could not be more different: Philipp Mathmann, Christophe Dumaux and Xavier Sabata. Baroque specialist Rubén Dubrovsky conducts the Bach Consort Wien based in the Vienna Musikverein.
