femmes formidables
Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel I Piano Quartet A flat major
Dora Pejačević I Piano Quartet D minor op. 25
Mel Bonis I Piano Quartet No. 1 B flat major op. 69

The obstacles with which these female composers had to struggle throughout their lives can be seen in sayings and quotations that need no further comment. For example, Camille Saint-Saëns wrote after hearing Mel Bonis’ music: “I would never have believed that a woman was capable of writing something like this. She knows all the tricks of our trade”. Abraham Mendelssohn, father of Fanny Hensel and Felix Mendelssohn, wrote to his daughter: “Music may become a profession for him, while for you it can and should only ever become an ornament, never the fundamental bass of your being and doing.” It is fortunate that Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel, Dora Pejačević and Mel Bonis were not dissuaded from composing by these statements: Their piano quartets prove that their music is far more than “ornament” or a copy of the work of their male contemporaries.

verflechtungen [collaboration]
Mozart I Sonata for Piano and Violin KV 377 combined with
Lutosławski I Partita for Violin and Piano
Clara Schumann I Three Romances for Violin and Piano op.22
Dietrich/ R. Schumann/ Brahms I F.A.E. Sonata

How do artistic projects come about? What happens when there is not only the lonely genius writing for himself, but something is created as a collective? This is what happened in the F.A.E. Sonata, for example, in which a group of young creative people at the time dealt with a theme: the concept of freedom, a new attitude to life that was reflected not only in personal development but also in artistic expression. These concepts are still relevant today: Herbert Schuch and Tobias Feldmann attempt to make the artistic concept of freedom tangible in the first part of the concert as well, in which two completely different works are intertwined and interwoven: Mozart’s remarkable Violin Sonata KV 377 with Lutosławski’s Partita, in which free moments were also repeatedly incorporated by the composer, in which both musicians can improvise “freely but not lonely” next to and with each other.

no clouds in haraz

Trumpet meets electronics: Composer, pianist and electronic artist Kaan Bulak and trumpeter Simon Höfele bring their sonically powerful new album “No Clouds in Haraz” (to be released in spring 2024 on Berlin Classics / Neue Meister) on stage, with a program including their own works framed by excursions to composers such as GiacintoScelsior Toru Takemitsu. The concert program is an expressive experience between geographical and instrumental boundaries, merging influences from the Middle East and contemporary music with the electronic sound language of Berlin. On stage, trumpet and grand piano are electronically enhanced and presented in a unique dimension of sound with an electronic foundation.
